“Stuffed Shirt” Bank Robber Gets More Than Eight Years in Prison

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Acting United States Attorney Lawrence G. Brown announced today that SCOTT STEWART SINGEWALD, 42, of Roseville, Calif., was sentenced this morning by U.S. District Court Judge Garland E. Burrell Jr. to eight years and one month in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release for his role in seven bank robberies.

This case is the product of an investigation by the Sacramento Violent Crimes Task Force, which includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Roseville Police Department, and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

According to Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez, who prosecuted this case, SINGEWALD was convicted of robbing seven banks in seven different cities during his spree of approximately nine months. The task force dubbed the perpetrator the “stuffed shirt bandit” because he stuffed cash into his shirt as he fled the robbery.

On June 23, 2008, SINGEWALD robbed the Wells Fargo Bank located at 945 Highway 65, Lincoln, Calif. At the time, he was wearing a dark hat and a distinctive, loud, Hawaiian-type shirt. After robbing the bank, he went to the Thunder Valley Casino with approximately $11,375 in stolen cash. Surveillance images of the June 23, 2008 robbery were widely distributed and, on June 27, 2008, Thunder Valley Casino security personnel reported to law enforcement that it had surveillance video from inside the casino generated on the date of the June 23 robbery depicting the distinctively dressed June 23, 2008 Wells Fargo Bank robber. SINGEWALD was arrested without incident outside his residence at a Roseville motel.

SINGEWALD was sentenced today for the June 23, 2008 robbery of a Wells Fargo and for six additional bank robberies:

1.  September 1, 2007, Bank of America, 2400 N. Texas Street, Fairfield, Calif.

2.  May 3, 2008, Bank of the West 186 Main Street, Woodland, Calif.

3.  May 16, 2008, Central Valley Community Bank, 1919 Howard Road, Madera, Calif.

4.  May 24, 2008, Washington Mutual Bank, 2866 W. March Lane, Stockton, Calif.

5.  June 11, 2008, River City Bank, 3992 Douglas Blvd., Suite 110, Roseville, Calif.

6.  June 20, 2008, Bank of the West, 3509 El Camino Ave., Carmichael, Calif.

He was also ordered to pay $700 special assessment, and restitution of $50,523.50.
