Washington State Man Convicted of Assault on a Bank Teller and Serial Bank Robbery

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—United States Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced that today MIGUEL KERCHERVAL, 44, pleaded guilty, without benefit of a plea agreement, to robbing and attempting to rob four different banks in the cities of Sacramento and Tulare.

The case is being investigated by the Sacramento Violent Crimes Task Force, which includes the FBI and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. The Police Departments in Tulare, California, and Reno, Nevada also assisted.

According to Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez, who is prosecuting the case, on September 20, 2006, KERCHERVAL attempted to rob the California Bank and Trust located at 1800 Arden Way, Sacramento. Later that day he successfully robbed a Citibank branch located at 1116 Alhambra Boulevard, Sacramento. On October 2, 2006 he attempted to rob a Washington Mutual Bank, located at 1079 East Prosperity Avenue, in the city of Tulare, and on October 5, 2006, he robbed a branch of the US Bank located at 2851 Del Paso Road, Sacramento. During his Washington Mutual Bank robbery, he admitted that he punched a teller in the face. After this robbery spree, he committed two additional robberies in the Reno, Nevada area.

KERCHERVAL faces up to 20 years in prison for each of his three Sacramento robberies, and up to 25 years in prison for his robbery and assault in Tulare. He also faces a fine of up to $1,000,000, restitution and five years federal supervised release. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables and any applicable statutory sentencing factors. He is in federal custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on August 22, 2008.
